Rich's Department Store
Completed in 1955, Rich's Department Store on Henley Street was an icon of mid-century modern design, with expansive glazing, green and red glazed brick, and a wavy concrete awning. Still a Knoxville landmark, the building is now UT Conference Center.
Barber McMurry worked with Atlanta's Stevens & Wilkinson. Other design partners included landscape architecture firm Eckbo, Royston & Williams; industrial designer Raymond Loewy & Associates; and lighting designer Abe Feder, who introduced the unique, original street lights (since demolished).
