Craiglen

Designed and built for the owner of Candoro Marble Company, John Craig, Craiglen is inspired by the 14th-century Palazzo Davanzati, an Italian villa that remains a tourist attraction in Florence.

The 5,000+ square foot home features two wings extending around a central courtyard, with terraces overlooking the courtyard and formal gardens. The walls are 14 inches deep with an exterior stucco facing and red clay tile roof. Like Candoro Marble's showroom in South Knoxville, Craiglen was also a showcase for marble — featuring 40 different kinds, including, of course, pink Tennessee marble. The design's attention to detail extended even to the bathrooms, where the black and white marble is perfectly matched between sheets, vein to vein.

Inside, custom walnut casework and paneling nestle beneath exposed ceiling beams. Although they look like weathered wood, they are actually concrete — painted by Hugh Tyler, a frequent collaborator of Barber McMurry. The formal Italianate gardens were designed by landscape architect Charles Lester.
