Lindsay Young Downtown YMCA

The design of the Lindsay Young YMCA in downtown Knoxville is based on Italian precedent, adapted to East Tennessee.

The building, continuously operating as a YMCA since 1929, is carefully designed to remain visually interesting across its mass. Materials of varying textures and colors, the development of an interesting skyline, and variations in fenestration through the use of arcades and recessed loggias combine to create an interesting yet symmetrical design. Barber McMurry's typical high-end details are apparent in custom woodwork, wrought iron, and hand-stenciled street sign, as well as to the original interior murals and leader boxes on the downspouts.

The project was a unique familial project for the firm. Charles Barber's older brother, George Jr., was the Physical Director of the YMCA. The building was constructed by A.R. McMurry, a respected contractor and the brother of the firm's other founder, Ben McMurry.
