UT Medical Center - Emergency Department

At the University of Tennessee Medical Center, Barber McMurry designed a significant expansion of the emergency department, enhancing patient care with a design that accommodates specific acuity levels.  

The new Haslam Family Center for Emergency & Trauma Services adds patient treatment and intake rooms, behavioral health, and a new "likely to discharge" suite with bays that allow rapid assessment and treatment of ambulatory patients. Altogether, the expanded Emergency Department means more patients can be seen and treated, faster.

The two-story lobby provides a modern, comfortable waiting area for patients and families. A separate, dedicated waiting space for immunocompromised patients offers added protection for those who are particularly vulnerable. The interior design is cheerful and bright, utilizing vibrant UT orange as well as soothing tones of white and blue, along with elements of natural wood, to warm the space. Details are evident, from the decorative wall panels that provide acoustic control to the custom art that highlights East Tennessee's native flora.

Other features of the new space include a modernized patient check-in, expanded ambulance bay, decontamination facilities, and a second-floor patient care suite to accommodate specialized treatment and extended care.
