Knoxville Public Works Complex

The City of Knoxville's Public Works Complex is a showcase for Knoxville's commitment to sustainable design.

Barber McMurry designed the new administrative building to LEED Silver standards, maximizing the energy-efficiency of the envelope, prioritizing natural light and views, and utilizing a geothermal heating and cooling system. The collaborative work area opens onto an extensive green roof — an amenity for the entire building.

The interior design highlights high ceilings and plentiful glazing through a minimalist color palette of white and gray, with exciting pops of lime green — lending energy and vibrancy to shared spaces, corridors and stairwells.

The design groups staff functions for maximum efficiency, housing clinic, physical therapy and shop spaces on the ground floor; the main entry, large meeting rooms and construction offices on the second floor; and engineering offices and an open work space on the third floor.
