The story of Barber McMurry is one of legacy, but never of resting on laurels.
Founded in 1915 right here in Knoxville by Charles Barber and Ben McMurry, we have designed many of the most iconic and distinctive buildings across East Tennessee and the Southeast — reflecting Charlie's original Beaux Arts inspiration, later mid-century modern styles, and today's progressive forms.
We've had our share of accolades. The June 1930 issue of Southern Architect and Building News was entirely devoted to the firm's work. In 1976, the Dulin Art Gallery (precursor to the Knoxville Museum of Art) held an exhibit dedicated to Barber McMurry's designs. In the past 20 years, our work has been recognized with 120 design awards, including being a finalist for Archdaily's Building of the Year in Healthcare.
Aligned with our legacy, we remain devoted to the craft of architecture: the quality and visual appeal of materials, the interest of varying textures and colors, the values of contrast and harmony, the irrefutable expression of character, and an intense attention to detail. Today, we pursue our craft with never-ending curiosity, the latest technologies, and a love of innovation — but our history is always there.
